AndroidO release
It is now about half a year ago that Google released the latest version of Android, called Android N (Nougat). This version was finished a little earlier than expected. Google has not been idle in the meantime, because the first developer version of Android O was released a few days ago. Android N could just become Android 8.0, but Google has not always done so in the past. In this article you can read when we expect Android O to be released, what the new functionalities of Android O are and the speculations of the new name.
When will Android O come out?
We think there are two logical moments when Android O could come out. Option one is that the latest version of Android O will be released at the 2017 Google I/O (Google's main conference of new technologies). The 2017 Google I/O falls on May 17-19. However, at I/O, we think they will only add new features to Android O and plan the real release with that of the Google Pixel 2. The Google Pixel is Google's high-end device and the only device that has been developed is provided by Google itself. The Google Pixel 2 is expected to be released in September or October.
What's new?
With the arrival of the developer version of Android O, a number of speculations of new functionalities have been confirmed. It is important to know that new functionalities will be added in the future. These are the functionalities that are definitely in Android O:
Notification filter; easy way to filter notifications by relevance.
Battery improvement; limiting apps in the background extends battery life.
Picture-in-picture; videos can now play natively in the foreground.
Autofill API; an easier way to manage passwords.
Better Bluetooth sound; Sony's LDAC codec provides better audio quality over Bluetooth.
AAudio codec; Record and play music at the same time in a faster way.
Adaptive icons; Dynamic to even moving app icons.
Java 8; The update of Java ensures smooth and fast apps.
New color gamuts'; This makes more colors available.
Native font support; Makes it less cumbersome to use your own fonts in an app.
Every critter needs a name
Like every previous version of Android, the new name of Android will again be a sweet treat. Android started in 2008 with Apple Pie for Android 1.0. The material design, as we are used to in Android, was implemented in 5.0 (Android Lollipop). So what will be the new name of Android O? Logically it will be Android Oreo, but Android Oatmeal Cookie is also still possible. Who knows, it will be Android Oliebol. As long as Google doesn't have an official announcement of the name, we don't know for sure yet.
Effects on existing apps
Android O will not change very much at the front, but it is important to check whether your app is suitable for Android O. Especially the limited background use can lead to problems. Would you like to have a compatibility test carried out without obligation? Then take contact us.
